Tattoo Pain: Myths and Realities

"Does it hurt?" That's question #1. Let's be honest: yes, getting a tattoo is not a massage. But it's a pain that's largely bearable, often described as a scratching or light burning sensation. At Owink in Metz, we do everything to make the experience as comfortable as possible.

The Pain Map

Here's a little guide to the areas, from least painful to most "prickly":

Level 1: "That tickles" (Easy zones)

  • Forearm (outer)
  • Shoulder
  • Thigh (outer)
  • Calf These are ideal areas for a first tattoo: the skin is thick and there's muscle underneath.

Level 2: "That stings a bit" (Medium zones)

  • Upper back
  • Triceps
  • Wrist
  • Ankle

Level 3: "Yeah, that's something" (Sensitive zones)

  • Ribs: You feel the vibrations on the bones.
  • Sternum
  • Foot: The skin is very thin.
  • Inner arm (biceps)

Level 4: "Warrior" (Very painful zones)

  • Neck
  • Armpits
  • Knee (and back of knee)
  • Fingers

How to Manage the Pain?

  1. Rest: A good night's sleep before your session is crucial.
  2. Eat: Never come on an empty stomach! Your body needs sugar to handle stress and endorphins.
  3. Breathe: Calm breathing helps relax your muscles.
  4. Chat: Talking with your tattoo artist or listening to music helps distract you.

Don't be afraid. The pride of wearing your new tattoo will quickly erase the memory of the pain!
